His commitment to music is evident from his long body of work that includes over 300 pieces of musical compositions. Dinant, Belgium. On June 4, 1962, the first Festival International de Jazz âAdolphe Saxâ took place in the Belgian town of Dinant, where Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, was born in 1814. Not surprisingly, most artists on the program are saxophonists. A Belgian quartet, consisting of tenor saxophonist Jacques Bailly, guitarist Willy Donni, drummer Bruno Castellucci, and bassist JosĂS Bedeur, opens the festival. The second highlight of the festival is a trio of Belgian pianist François Boland, who appeared with American bassist Jimmy Woode and Belgian drummer Freddy Rottier. Regarded as the greatest instrumental soloist of all-time, Stanley Gayetzky, famously known as Stan Getz emerged as one of the most significant musical forces in the world of jazz post World War II. With his distinctively warm and lyrical tone, Getz is fondly dubbed as âThe Soundâ because of his singularity and musical innovations. His commitment to music is evident from his long body of work that includes over 300 pieces of musical compositions. Ranked among Americaâs top tenor saxophone players, Getz was a gifted saxophonist who could play just about anything on it, a quality that put him on top of the polls. Every year, the Jazz en Baie festival takes place in the beautiful bay of Mont Saint-Michel Todayâs broadcast shows a special gathering between two grandmasters of French jazz: pianist Jacky Terrasson and trumpeter StĂSphane Belmondo. The two team up for an amazing concert in which jazz is combined with soul and a touch of chanson française. The Franco-American pianist Terrasson delights in travelling the world, collaboration with others and leading his own trio, quartet, or quintet. In the 1960s, composer Michel Magne transformed the Château d'HĂSrouville, an 18th-century country house north of Paris and former home of lovers George Sand and FrĂSdĂSric Chopin, into the first residential recording studio. In addition to its excellent facilities, the complex featured a swimming pool and a beautiful garden, allowing artists to stay for weeks or months at a time. From David Bowie and Iggy Pop to Pink Floyd and Chet Baker, countless stars recorded unforgettable music here until the studio closed in the 1980s. Three decades later, Château d'HĂSrouville has reopened its doors. This program follows American baritone Gregory Porter as he collaborates with the British electro-pop band Metronomy. New Orleans, U.S.A. Self-taught musician Les McCann became the international jazz superstar he is today after the release of his album âSwiss Movementâ which he recorded in 1968 with the late Eddie Harris. Yet there is much more to this musician than that one record. McCann moves comfortably from one jazz style to the next, demonstrating impressive chops in all areas, from bop to fusion, and from vocals to the keys of the electric piano, clavinet, or synthesizer. His mix of church and swing music captures the spirit of the time perfectly, even when an illness prevented him from playing with more than one finger at a time in the early 1990s. Trans-Siberian Railway, Russia. Five musicians, in excess of 3000 miles, nine concerts, in thirteen days: in November 2015, the five-piece ensemble âTango Extremoâ left the confines of its hometown, the Dutch city of The Hague, to travel through Russia. On the musiciansâ jam-packed itinerary were performances in Moscow, Novosibirsk, Saratov, Tomsk, and Barnaul. There, the ensemble collaborated with a local classical orchestra, the members taught workshops, and travelled countless miles by busses, planes, and trains. The warm welcome of the Russian audiences made up for the icy Siberian colds of the journey. Teatro CalderĂłn, Madrid, Spain. PatĂĄx was heavily influenced by seminal fusion bands like Weather Report and Return to Forever. Donât mistake this Spanish powerhouse for a carbon copy of either, however, as PatĂĄx presents an accomplished mix of styles, including soul, jazz, funk and hip-hop. The group is led by the passionate Spanish-American percussionist Jorge Perez, who draws his musical influence from both sides of the Atlantic. Germeringen Jazztage, Germering, Germany. This broadcast shows a rare appearance at the 1996 Germeringer Jazztage by the legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de LucĂa and his sextet. Some may question the inclusion of a flamenco guitarist within a jazz festival. However, the similarities between flamenco and blues have been well documented: both are the outlet for a poor, disenfranchised minority, with a primitive strength, boundless capabilities for improvisation and a requirement for breathtaking virtuosity – all qualities shown by Paco de LucĂa in this performance. Moreover, he has long been experimenting with jazz forms (evident even from his inclusion of bass, drums, and saxophone in his sextet), while still retaining the essence of the flamenco tradition. The Hammond B3 is an electric organ, which generates sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup. Rhino Jazz Festival, Saint-Chamond, France. Hailing from a long tradition of Malian kora players, Ballake Sissoko has worked with renowned musicians such as Toumani DiabatĂS and Taj Mahal. L'Olympia Bruno Coquatrix, Paris, France. Unlike many of his fellow jazz cats, vocalist Gregory Porter transcends the jazz bubble. After sustaining a shoulder injury, this former American football player turned to jazz singing. He was discovered in a Californian jazz club by pianist, saxophonist and composer Kamau Kenyatta. Porter lent his vocal skills to gospel choirs across the country and a string of successful musicals before turning his talent to his own compositions. His rise since then has been meteoric. Porterâs magnificent, burnished baritone can sink into a lyric with luxurious ease, the melody gently sculpted into new shapes at every turn, with the rhythm tugging subtly back and forth across the bar line. Dutch composer/pianist and grand duke of jazz Misha Mengelberg (1935) has been submerged in the shadow of dementia, ending his life as a musician. At the London jazz club Vortex in 2013 he impressively says his goodbyes to the international stage. Itâs also his last major performance with his band, the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra. Following a highly successful small-group jazz concert at New York Town Hall on May 17, 1947, Armstrong's manager Joe Glaser dissolved the Armstrong big band on August 13, 1947 and established a six-piece small group. This group was called the All Stars, and in 1964 Louis Armstrong recorded his biggest-selling record, Hello, Dolly! He made assorted television appearances, especially in the 1950s and 1960s â the recorded film was a TV Show in Australia when Armstrong was at the peak of his career. The North Sea Jazz Festival, Den Haag, The Netherlands. The North Sea Jazz Festival is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz as the festivalâs staple music genre, many others, such as blues, soul, funk, or hip hop, pass by. In 1982, legendary swing band leader jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman performed two sets with his septet at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. True to form, with his concert the 'King of Swing' revisited the atmosphere of the swing era â the 1930s â when jazz enjoyed tremendous popularity. Goodman's septet includes Scott Hamilton (tenor saxophone), John Bunch (piano), Phil Flanigan (double bass), Mel Lewis (drums), Warren VachĂS (trumpet), and Chris Flory (guitar). World-class Dutch jazz pianist Peter Beets has shared the stage with jazz greats Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, âTootsâ Thielemans, Elvin Jones, George Coleman, Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, and John Clayton. His mother a music teacher and his father an Oscar Peterson and Art Blakey enthusiast, Beets was surrounded by music from an early age. And though music was in their blood, neither parent associated the word âmusicianâ with a career. Sydney, Australia. The UK based band Metronomy started out as a bedroom project by Joseph Mount, who during its early stages was the sole contributor to the band's repertoire. After the debut release, Mount started expanding the band's personnel: first by adding two members, and later increasing it by one more. Metronomy's critical acclaim comes from frenetically hybrid indie pop style knitted together with trademark electronic sounds inspired by Mount's favorite acts, namely Autechre and Funkstorung. Auditorio Ruy de Carvalho, Carnaxide, Portugal. Maria Ana Bobone (Portugal) is one of the best fado singers of her generation. She started singing fado when she was 16. Her debut album is called âAlma Novaâ and marked the beginning of her amazing career. For the recordings of her next two albums, âLuz Destinoâ and âSenhora da Lapaâ Maria Ana welcomed instruments that are usually not present in fado music: the harpsichord and saxophone. After that, she continued her career with the release of âNome de Marâ, which received many positive reviews.
